A little bit kooky & quirky. Always fun and looking on the bright side even if it gets ridiculous!

I'm still sticking with the blues with this one.  Yes, there is an X, but there is also a square somewhere in all those circles.

This is one of my favorites.  I love BAH-LUU so all the blue in this piece is very calming and happy at the same time.

I Get It!

I get it.  I really do!  After all, I'm in the same boat.  Art buyers have to make choices.  Sometimes decisions between paying the same price for a necessity and a piece of art they really love.  Lot's of people love art, but it's just not a necessity to them.  So that's why I am always so grateful, honoured & tickled pink when someone chooses to put their hard earned  money towards purchasing a piece of art I have made.  You know who you are out there.  Thanks so much!

Fresh Start

I'm starting my day by avoiding an in-progress painting. I'm an expert at avoidance.  In rummaging around my art room looking for something else to do, I came across a very old painting.  Old subject, old style.  Get out the gesso!  Ready for something new.  An atmospheric landscape perhaps?

Before and After

Before

After

Just before Christmas I posted a photo of a trade my sister and I did - a hooked rug for a Bubble Tree painting.  I still needed to complete the edging on the rug and I actually completed that in a somewhat timely manner.  Amazing.

There is a very large wall in our living room that has needed 'something' on it for years and years.  It was just too big for one painting - even if that painting was very large.  After convincing my husband that it really shouldn't be such a crime to actually put some nail holes in the wall, we created  a 'Handmade wall'.  It showcases some of the handmade things I've collected. I've left room to keep the wall a work in progress so I can always be on the lookout for that little something to perfectly fit into that blank space in the middle.  And some small stuff for all the other spaces.  It will be chockablock full.  A feast for the eyes.  Fun.

The 'Freewheelers' are now available at Fallen Leaf Art Gallery in Canmore, Alberta. 102 - 822 Main Street.  Have fun browsing through all of these little retro paintings to find one that speaks to you.

From Canmore you can get on your bike and cycle the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail, a scenic paved bike/pedestrian pathway connecting Canmore and Banff. Above is a 'Freewheeler' you might meet on your way!

A Special Flood Rose

by Arlene Westen Evans

Arlene Westen Evans, along with her husband Stephen, is the owner of Evanescence Art Gallery in High River.  The gallery is not scheduled to reopen.  Even after a month of cleaning, there is still much more work and many difficult decisions to be made by Arlene and Stephen.

Arlene is also an artist.  Upon hearing of The Alberta Flood Rose Project she knew she wanted to contribute a 4”x4” piece depicting the Alberta Wild Rose.  The deadline was the next day.

But in the cleaned out, ripped apart gallery, it was obvious there were no suitable materials.  No paint, no canvas, no brushes.

But, there were cardboard boxes.  Nice cardboard!   We ripped off part of a lid flap and measured out 4”x4”.  Arlene had 3 pens – a green Sharpie, a black pen and a blue pen.  She selected the green Sharpie, sat down and slowly started drawing.  She called it doodling.  With her permission, I coloured in her green Alberta Wild Rose with pencil crayons when I got home.  This is her submission to The Alberta Flood Rose Project.

A Very Manly, Rugged Painting

'Chinook Arch'
Acrylic on unstretched canvas
42x19
I had a problem.  How could I send a rather large painting to my son who is going to school far away?  He has repeatedly requested a large painting to cover his very white, bare walls.  But sending a large painting thru the mail and then having to arrange for it's storage over summer and shipment back home was not reasonable.  (Yes, occasionally I can be reasonable.)
So I created a portable, very manly, rugged painting.  It's painted on gessoed unstretched canvas with brass grommets so it can be hung off nails or hidden hooks.  It's earthy and organic.  Think of painting on a ship's sail.  It will fit nicely into a suitcase after being rolled over a large cylinder.  It will crack and wrinkle and maybe fray and all of that should add nicely to the outdoor rugged feel of the painted landscape.
Definition of Chinook Arch- the cloud formation that develops during a warm, dry wind that blows at intervals down the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

Framed Acrylic Paintings

I just had these 2 paintings framed and they look great!  It really makes 'It Was a Good Tobogganing Day' a substantial painting that would look good in a mud room or family room. It is framed in a very thick 2 1/4" black gallery style or floater frame.
24x12 acrylic on birch board
SOLD

'The Optimist Club' (series 10J12) is also newly framed in a black 1 1/4" gallery style or floater frame.  It's filled with colour on a dreary rainy day - hence the title!  10x10 acrylic on canvas  SOLD
